Cheshire Cheese and Wellington, who finished fourth and fifth respectively in their debut campaigns in the Birkenhead Sunday Premier Division last season, met at Pensby High School astro pitch on Sunday, with both sides eager to build on their early momentum in what proved to be a lively encounter.

A high-tempo match unfolded. With both teams’ intent on playing attractive football, it was Cheshire Cheese who struck first, just before the break, when Lorcan Rogan reacted quickest to a loose ball from a free kick, rifling home from ten yards to give his side the advantage.

The second half saw Cheese squander several clear chances to extend their lead, with wasteful finishing and resolute defending from Wellington keeping the deficit to just one.

That profligacy proved costly as Wellington grew into the game and were rewarded with a late equaliser — albeit in fortuitous circumstances. Lewis Willingham’s deflected shot came back off the post, only for a Cheese defender to inadvertently turn it into his own net under pressure from Willingham who had followed up on his first effort.

Wellington nearly snatched all three points with the final kick of the game, when again Lewis Willingham’s well-struck placed effort from 20 yards came back off the post.

However, with no one on hand to follow up this time, the ball was cleared and the referee’s whistle brought proceedings to an end, with honours even at 1-1.

Rob Cull was on target for the second successive week, his solitary goal proving enough to seal a narrow 1-0 win for Beechwood over Bushell Newton.

Premier Division Newcomers Whitby Rangers made a statement on their debut with a thrilling 5-3 win over Fender. Luke Jones starred with a Man of the Match display, while Matty Vickers netted twice. Joe Foster, Gabe Kwateng, and Tom Ruffer also found the net in a hard-fought victory.

In the sole Division One fixture, Seamus O’Connell ran out 3-1 winners against The Dell. Goals from Jason Bull, Jamie Scarisbrick and Sam Copley secured the points.

Glenavon Athletic continued their perfect start to the season, recording a second consecutive win to top Division Two. This week they eased past Poulton Victoria S&S with a comprehensive 4-0 triumph. George Wild bagged a brace, with Paul Keenan and Ben Stephenson also on the scoresheet.

Despite goals from Kieran Hodgson and Martin Eastham Rangers slumped to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Lions FC. Matt Lydiate, Paul Ryan, Mark Head, and Sam Langan found the net for Lions, who now sit second on goal difference.

Parkgate St Germain, claimed a comfortable 4-0 win against Lottie Dod FC. Alex Butterworth was the standout performer with a brace, while Luke Hall and Nick McKnight also chipped in.

MSC Eastham and AFC Raeburn played out a 1-1 draw, with Roger Doe and Tom Brassey each getting on the scoresheet.

A superb hat-trick from John Skipsy, along with a goal from Declan Wray, saw Catons FC ease to a 4-0 win over West Kirby Wasps.
